CAPTAIN'S BOLD RUSE. ' Captain Timmls, of the steamer Janeta, now In tho Fremantlo Harbour, is known in marine circles as "the man who fooled Rojestvensky." . Tho adventure which earned for him this fame occurred when ho was in charge of the Leyland liner Planet Venus. During the Russo-Japanese war tho latter vessel wa3 chartered by tho Japanese to carry contraband from Europe. Admiral Rojcstvcnsky's fleet was then on.its .way.to the Far East in itn forlorn hope to re-establish Russia's naval supremacy. Captain Timmls was naturally anxious to avoid this licet, but ono day he found his steamer right in, the midst of the modern armada. With a promptitude that allayed all suspicion ho hoisted the Russian flag, and for two days ho boldly steamed in company, with the warshiDs. tho officers of which probably mistook his steamer for one of their own transports. Finally, ho eluded the feet under cover of a thick fog, and safely landed his freight, which comprised Ammunition for tho Japanese Captain Timmis has served 18 years in • tho Royal Naval Reservf. for which he-received a medal from tho lato King.'.'. ANOTHER NEW TYPE OF VESSEL. ORDER PLACED IN ENGLAND. ■ Messrs. Osborne. Graham, nnd Co.. of nylton, Sunderland, who wero tho builders of the Monltoria. tho patent vessel with grooved sides, have received from Messrs. A. Gronquist and Co., of Newcastle, a contract to build a vessel on a new system of construction. Tho 3tPamer h to ho 252 feet extreme by 34 feet 3 inches in breadth, with a draft of water of 16 feet, and the system of constructionto be followed is that patented by Messrs. A. li. Ayro and Maxwell. Ballard, two •young naval architects, of Newcastle. li> the Avre-Ballard typo of shin construction the structure takes the form transversely of an arched trunk supcr-imposJd upon tho normal moulded depth, and constituting an integral part of ' the hull. .The deck is thus lifted to a higher level, whilo the corners of tho arch, in conjunction with other structures specially provided, form rigid of tho vertical nnd horizontal sparß of th" tr.""-. verso girder. Arched brackets, while efficiently binding the sides (a reverse ill fitted on tho face), obviate tho: necessity for pillars or strut supports. It is efaimed that tho arched form of the structure over and abovo the hull proper will increaso internal volume and tho rcservo buoyancy, or, in other words, will increase tho size and capacity of the vessel with reduced expenditure of material. The smaller dimensions nnd displacements will permit machinery of less power to be installed for a given sea speed, with reduced coal consumption and bunker space. Further, tho new typo of vessel will bo self-trimming to a .very satisfactory extent,
