Dowdall, which was published in Tun Dominion yesterday, ■■, The following report of tlio meeting to which Mr. Dowdall's statement referred has'been officially supplied to the press: At a*'meeting of the Wellington Trades and. Labour Council on Thursday' night, the president (Mr. E. J. Carey) in tho chair, thero v;as an attendance of twontyI five delegates and. several visitins members of unions. ■ ■ •■'. ■ After-tho confirmation of the minutes, the-.first business was the further consideration of remits to the annual Trades, Councils' Conference, in Christchurch, to bo held at Easter. A delegate moved, as one: of the remits, ."That, the objective of. tho New ,Zcaland Labour Party, be, altered,iM";6ub : ' stituting the word 'Socialism'•'lor-the; words "gradual publio lOwnership.'"-. ? ! jThe president ruled'ithoomotiafiiiont oforder, on-tho grounds that-tho "dbjectixeof the New Zealand Labour; Party was a: matter for that body .to deal ■,with, and its' alteration was not within the province of tho Wellington' Trades Council. At this stage, Mr. D. M'Laren, M.P., sitting delegate from tho Wellington Wharf Labourers' : Union, asked for, nnd was granted, to make a statement as to his standing'in tho cbuncil. .Mr. M'Laren said that ho intended'to still claim his rights as a delegate from tho Wharf Labourers'.Union, as ho had been advised by counsel that the'election of delegates at tho last meeting, of tho union was not a valid one; because of tho fact ' that his "(Sir. M'Laren'*) nomination for re-election was wrongly rejected by tho meeting.
After Mr. Sl'Larcn's statement,: tho standing orders were suspended by vote of the'meeting, to there, and .then deal with tho letter from tho Wharf Labourers'. Union enclosing the names of the delegates elected by it at its last.meeting.- and tho election of whom Mr. M'Laren disputed. Tho letter enclosed tho names of Messrs. TV Smith. U. O. Far-land, C. Thorpe. J. Dowdall, W. Connell, and P. Green.
