EMPIRE WHEAT SUPPLY.
A new source of wheat supply for the United Kingdom which is likely to become available in the near futuro is British East Africa. v Tho area under wheat , cultivation in that protectorate is rapidly extending, and is now nearly sufficient to supply all the requirements of tho coun- ! try itself. . It is expected that in a very few years | a considerable surplus will bo available , for export. The examination at the ( Imperial Instituto of samples of wheat , specially grown in British East Africa , snows that these wheats would command a ready sale in tho United Kingdom at | prices comparing favourably with the fin- j est descriptions of .grain at present im- , ported. i . i ' Edible beans nro another important j food product now bong cultivated in ] British East Africa for export. , An interesting example of a product of ] minor. importance which East Africa , might readily produce is dill fruit, from which dill oil, used in medicine, is dis- j tilled. Some of this fruit grown in Bri- . tish East Africa at Liinoru, 7000 ft. above sea level, has been examined at the Imperial Institute.
