At a meeting of the Westport Chamber of Commerce to-day, it was decided to writo and protest to tbo Minister about the slackness of work at tho Scddonvillo Stato coal-mine, members alleging that the miners wcro doing only ono or two days' work per week; also to protest against tho closing of tho briquette works. Members stated that no systematic attempt had been mado to push tho sales of briquettes and eggettes, and tbo Government Department was using Newcastle coal instead of coal from their own mines, and tho ultimate effect would bo a considerable loss of mining population to Now Zealand. It was decided to ask tho Minors' Union to support tho protest, and if no satisfaction is forthcoming to hold' a public meeting on the question.
