' A passer-by in the middlo of the. night discovered that Crewe House, the residence of Lord Crewe, was on fire. The inmates, who were aslcon, were aroused, and urgent arrangements wcro mado for the safety of the Countess, who bad just given birth to a son, and who was just below the burning, rooms. Tho upper floor was soon well alight, but many fire,.engines were quiclJj on the scene, and snececdod in confining tho outbreak to that part of tho building- , Lords Crewe and Rosebery arrived during tho firo arid directed operations. Crowds of .well-Known society peoplo arrived in motor-cars. The cause af,',the fiio was the fusing of an electric wire. *
