The barquo Speculant, a regular trader between New Zealand and Victoria, is ashore at Capo Fatten. Tho crow, consisting of eight hands, is believed to bo sr/f;. (Rcc. Tho ,barquo was thrco weeks endeavouring to get from Warrnambool to Melbourne, whero it was intended to load timber for Now Zealand. Strong gales drove her back threo times. To-day sho succeeded in rounding Capo Otway, and was subsequently driven ashore. Sho is probably a total wreck. CAPTAIN'S STATEMENT. , A TREMENDOUS BUMP. (Rec. February 11, a.m.) \ Melbourne, February 10.' •' The Speculant is a total wreck, i Tho captain states that in tho dark, with a dense mist and a,heavy sea, ho thought ho was well off tho land, when suddenly a tremendous bump was felt, and all were thrown on tho deck. Tho Vessel continued bumping till tho bottom was knocked but and sho was driven within a fbw yards of tho beach. . All managed to get ashoro-by fixing a rope to tho rock. They wandered in the bush until they struck a' sottler's residence, where they wero well cared for. • Somo .seamen climbed aboard tho vessel in tho morning and secured a fow belongings. Tho' masts are gone, and tho barque is breaking up - . The barque Speculant put into 'Wellington. Inst year with her riggrUg carried away, whilst bound froia Port Es•porance, Tasmania, to Gisborhc. Sho left Warrnambool on her present voyage on January 17 to Melbourne. She is a-steel barque of 393 tots' gross, 150 ft. long, 27.2 ft. .in beam, and 11.3 ft. in depth'. She was built in 1895 by Cuming and Ellis, at Inverkeithing, to' ■ tho order' of P. J. M'Gennan,'Warrnambool, Victoria. She is commanded by Captain Richards; . BARQUE CAPSIZES ONLY ONE MAN SAVED;.'
