The Hon. E. M'Kenzie returned to Wellington from Auckland last evening; Mr. J. M. ■ Johnston, of Palmerston North, has been appointed secretary to the Racing Commission.'. Mr. A. Mackintosh, New Zealand superintendent for Messrs. Dalgety and ' Co., Ltd., who has been on a visit of inspection to tho various branches of that firm in the Napier district, has returned to Wellington. Colonel Moore, the well-known sporting enthusiast and angler, who has oeen in camp at Lake Taupo for over a month past, leaves for England via America in April. He will be accompanied by Mrs. Moore and the latter's sister, Miss Davids. Our Master ton correspondent wires that Mr. T. Honayne, General: Manager of Railways,, together with Messrs. Burton, Beattic, Whitcombe, Widdop, arid Pear-, 6on, of the Railway Department, arrived there by special train from Napier last evening. Thero died in Groymouth last Friday morning (writes our correspondent) one of the very early pioneers of the West C'oa«t. Mr. William Rac, in his 78th year. He was a native of Haddington, Scotland, but, being of an adventurous disposition, ho emigrated,' and landed in Melbourne in 1852. ' In 1873, in Conjunction with Mr. .San-ell, Mr. Rno established the Dispatch Foundry Company, Greymouth, which, under his able management,, developed into one of the most flourishing institutions, of-its kind in the Dominion. In VJA3, owing to the infirmities ot old age, Mr. Ilea withdrew from active connection with the foundry, and lived in retirement until his death. Mrs. Rac survives him.
