The Hon. E. M'Kenzie returned to Wellington from Auckland last evening; Mr. J. M. ■ Johnston, of Palmerston North, has been appointed secretary to the Racing Commission.'. Mr. Hugh Cassidf, proprietor of the West Coast tourist route coaches, is at present on a visit to Wellington. Dr. A. Parker, of ''St.' Thomas's Hospital, London, and Mrs. Parker, arrived in Wellington by the Wnirrimoo from Sydney, yesterday. % • Commander Tiercelin, of the French warship ICersaint, was ; entertained at luncheon by 'Mr. James Macintosh at the Wellington Club yesterday. . . . , Mr. T. H. Evans, superintendent of the industrial department of the A.M.P., has been promoted to bo superintendent at •Napier. Mr. Evans has been. five years in the Wellington district. Lieutenant Howarth, who has been offered a position in tho Education Department, Gisborno district, has resigned his appointment as area-adjutant at/ Tnuherinikau, under the new defence scheme. Mr. G. M. Kebbell, chairman of directors of th?j>Equitab]e Building and Investment Society, is a; passenger to England .by the • Turakina, which leaves Wellington at noon to-day. Mr. M. Kebbdir is also a passenger ; by the vessel.-
Mr. A. Mackintosh, New Zealand superintendent for Messrs. Dalgety and ' Co., Ltd., who has been on a visit of inspection to tho various branches of that firm in the Napier district, has returned to Wellington. Colonel Moore, the well-known sporting enthusiast and angler, who has oeen in camp at Lake Taupo for over a month past, leaves for England via America in April. He will be accompanied by Mrs. Moore and the latter's sister, Miss Davids. Our Master ton correspondent wires that Mr. T. Honayne, General: Manager of Railways,, together with Messrs. Burton, Beattic, Whitcombe, Widdop, arid Pear-, 6on, of the Railway Department, arrived there by special train from Napier last evening. They, are on an annual tour of inspection and will return to Welling-, ton this morning. At tho conference of delegates of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants which concluded yesterday Mr. W. 'A. Vcitch was re-elected president, and the following were elected tie executive council:—North Island: Locomotive department, Mr. W. T. Wilson (Palmerston J^orth); • maintenance, Mr. J. Churchotise (Cross Creek); traffic, Mr. G; S. Front (Auckland); workshops, Mr. E. Moore (Petone). South Island: Locomotive, Mr. I'\ Hutching (Invercargill); maintenance, Mr. E. J. Thero died in Groymouth last Friday morning (writes our correspondent) one of the very early pioneers of the West C'oa«t. Mr. William Rac, in his 78th year. He was a native of Haddington, Scotland, but, being of an adventurous disposition, ho emigrated,' and landed in Melbourne in 1852. ' In 1873, in Conjunction with Mr. .San-ell, Mr. Rno established the Dispatch Foundry Company, Greymouth, which, under his able management,, developed into one of the most flourishing institutions, of-its kind in the Dominion. In VJA3, owing to the infirmities ot old age, Mr. Ilea withdrew from active connection with the foundry, and lived in retirement until his death. Mrs. Rac survives him.
