Poor old Salute, once a winner of tho Great Eastern Railway Handicap, and the first winner (by Carbine) of tho great brood mare Fcsta, was (says an English exchange) recently saved from • nn ignominious end at tho hands of tho knacker. Tho old gelding, who in his later years had beeu running with moro or, generally, loss success in steeplechases in Germany, alter bis various English and French owners had tired of him, was actually in tho yard of the slaughtermen at Friederichshagen when tho Messrs. Von Weinberg—for whom Salute's dam Fcsta had bred such first-raters as Festino, Fcls, Fabula, Faust, and Fervor— stepped in. and Salute, thanks to tho kind •hearts of tho two famous sporting brothers, is to end liis days in peaco in their paddocks at AVnldfricd.
