(From Oar Sneclal CorresDondent.l • Palmerston N.,- February 7. The annual meeting of the High School! Board Governors "was held last night,.. .F: 7 * • Collingivood (chairman) presiding. In view ot the proposed "schem« to enlarge the representation on the Technical School Committee tho election of a chairman was postponed for a fortnight, though it w?.s the unanimous wish of tho ■ Governors that Mr. Collingwood should allow himself to bo re-elected for a further term. The report of the Technical School Committee showed that the number of pupils continued to increase. The finances were satisfactory in tfcet the - expenditure for the year had been kept ■ well within tho receipts: The work of the Director, Mr. F. i). Opie, and the teaching staff (i>."r-oering 27) was excep-. tionallv good. Tne cost of maintenance of the school building was greatly increased daring the year owing to High School being carried on there, since ita" building was destroyed by fire.
The chairman of the High School reported that the work of the school for the greater portion of the year had been carried on under difficulties owing to tho destruction of the building hv fire. The attendance of pupils during the year had been a record, and there was every in- _ dication that there would be a still: greater increase in the coming year, prob- i ably necessitating the appointment of an- j other teacher. In connection with the : new school," it 'would be - necessary to : raise funds for furnishings, but the • Mayoress (Mrs. J. A. Nash) had kindly, volunteered to assist in this direction, y and a function would shortly be organised , with this , object. ' /
The ordinary meeting of the board was aftonvards lield, when the rector's; report was read. This showed that' there ' were eighty new pupils enrolled, the total,' roll now being 122 boys and 72 girls. • Pupils from the school had been most successful in the recent examinations. The rector also mentioned that the number of boarders had overtaxed the accom-modation-and it would be necessary for him to mate additions to the house. It was decided to call for applications for a male assistant at a salary of .£l5O per • annum.

His Majestv's Theatre, the latest ven-' ttue of Messrs. J. Fuller and Sons, was op'oned last night as a moving picture show. Every available part of' the building, which is a very large one, was occupied, and very large numbers of . people had to be turned away. Mr. Fuller, sen., performed the opening ceremony,, and also contributed a vocal item, singing his old favourite sons. "Geraldint." An orclies- . tra, led by Mr. Ciinino, contributed in- ■ cidental music.
The forthcoming band contest of th» North Bland Bands' Association promises to be highly succesfsul. There aro ten entries in the A grade and twelve entries in the B grade. Six of the bands come from the South Island. All the best bands have. entered, and fruiu a contest' and musical point of view the gathering will probable prove a record one. Some of the bands will arrive here on Thursday, while most of them will be here by Saturday..
Two l'almerston vouths, Sergeant-Major Gill and Sergeant Paltridge, of the Boy Scoutf, are apnlicauts for the Australian cadotships, and have been notified to present themselves for examination in iington immediately. The examination i» a prettv stiff one, including five subjects, from English, geography, history, «lementary mathematics, geometry,, algebra, and general knowledge; also two subjects from mathematics, chemistry, physics, French, German, or Latin, wlulc therearo examinations in physical and medical matters.
