VOGELTOWN DRAINAGE.
DIFFICULTIES OF THE WORK.
The city engineering ; department now lias the work of draining 'Vngeltown well in hand, although it will bo some considerable time before it is completed. As Vogeltown falls away on either hand from tho ridge, running north and south, upon which the street known as E. W. Mills l?ond lias been formed, the drainage of the suburb will lmvo to be carried out in two main sec'ions. Oil the eastern pido Iho sewer livo will run down through lierhamporo to the Island Hav sewer, and on the western side pines will eventually bo laid down through Happy Valley until they connect with the main drain already laid along Obiro Itoml. On tho eastern sido of Vogeltown, where most of the population is located, a main drain has already been carried from Island Bay, lip past tho Plague Hospital to the northeastern corner of tho suburb, and the laying of branch drains will bo commenced shortly.
Thowork of draining VogtHown is one of considerable difficulty, owing first to tho broken nature of the land, and secondly to . I lie fact that the street lines are exceedingly involved and tortuous. Private pnperty will liavo tn bo traversed by the sewers in some cases, and this, it is* understood, will give /rise to a certain number of objections from the ratepayers whoso' property is to bo invaded. The powers of the City Council in this matter are mandatory, but when an objection is lodged to a sewer being carried through private property, the council has to call a meeting and hear the objection publicly. This done, it lias power, at discretion, In either abandon, retain, or amend its original proposal.
