A REDUCED CREDIT BALANCE. The following report upon the working of tho Electrical Tramways Department of tho City Corporation for tho four weeks ended January 5, and for tho period from April 1, 1910, to January 5, 1911, was laid'before tho Tramways Committee at its meeting yesterday, by tho City Electrical Engineer (Mr. S. Ricliardson). On the tramway account tho gross revenue for tho four weeks shows an increase of XIS6, and the expenditure an increaso of £G1I), as compared with tho corresponding period of last year. Comparing tlio totals to date it will bo seen that the gross rcvenuo has increased by .£3161, and the expenditure by XS37S. Included in the expenditure this year nro the following special items:—Street widening, .£1170; conversion of box cars, .£550; duplication of Kilbirnio track, £337: total, .£2057. Tho principal increases in tho ordinary operating expenses are as follow Wages (motoruien and conductors), XSIS; ticket cheek, .£300; accident insurances, .£-(10 ; repairs and maintenance electrical equipment of line, £527; repairs and maintenance buildings and fixtures and erecting ticket collector, .£191; repairs and maintenance cars, .£1080; power-houso fuel, £609; repairs and maintenance powerhouse plant, .£192. Under various other headings decreases in expenditure have been cft'octed amounting to .£I2OO. After allowing for capital charges, tho net result of tramway operation to dato is a credit balance of .£273, as compared with .£2218 last year. On tho power supply account, tho revenue from tho salo of current for tho four weeks shows a decreaso of £S2, and tlio expenditure an increaso of £0, as compared with last year. Comparing tho totals to date, it will bo seen that tho revonuo has increased by £420, and tho expenditure by £31G. On the tramway and power supply accounts the net result of these two businesses for tho nino months is n credit balanco of £181, as against £2105 for tho corresponding period last year.
