Her Excellency and the Y.W.C.A. Her Excellency Lady Islington Jias befn interesting hors'elt a great deal iu the welfare of the. Young Women's Christian Association, particularly since the misfortune it met with in being 'burnt' ont' of its home, and on Saturday she entertained the members of the association and its helpers at a- most enjoyablo -garden party, held in. the grounds of Government House. Althought the weather had ■ivorh a threatening aspect in the earlier part of the day, a change for tho better came over it, and in the afternoon the sun shone brightly, adding a little degreo of warmth to l|he decidedly fresh stato of th'e ntmosjiliore. Their Excellencies, for Lord Islington' was prosent as well, helped, in the entertainment of the guests, could not do too much for the enjoyment of their guests, and were assisted by Miss Stapletou Cotton, Mrs. Guise, and Captains Shannon and llaitland. A hattrimming competition, in which Miss Cotton, Mrs. Guise, and Mrs. Ilanimcrton were the judges, created a great deal of amusement, but no less interesting were tho races which were held, ihe Hon. Joan Diclison-Poynder taking -part, in one of them. A band, playing at intervals;'(ilso added greatly to the pleasure of those present. • Tea'was served in the ballroom, the tables being beautifully arranged with begonias and other Hovers. In one of the drawing-rooms several of the guosts found it impossible to pass by the beautiful • agapanthus flowers, with which it was arranged, so exquisite were they. Towards the end of tho afternoon; Miss M'Lean, on behalf of the. Y.W.C.A., thanked her Excellency for n most enjoyable afternoon and for the interest she was displaying-in its welfare., -In reply, Lady -Islington; stated that the hoped while she was in.New Zealand, to make the garden party ail annual affair. Her Excellency was wearing a velvet coat and skirt-and a black and- white hat. ' Miss Stnpleton Cotton had on a cream serge coat.and skjrt and' black liat, and Mrs.. Guise was in a heliotrope dress and toque of the same colour. The Hon. Joan Dickson-Poynder wore a cream coat and' skirt and 'cream' hat. AJ.nong' these' present who do so much for tho Y.W.C.A., were Mrs. M'Clay (the president of the .association),' Mrs. Hoby,— Mifs-'-'Sl'-LeanV-Mrs. Rhodes, Mrs. Parsons,' Mrs. ICreeft, Mrs: Hammerton, Mrs.. C. Webb, Miss Lawsoh, Miss Helyer, '-JlrsA de Castro, Mr5....C...Wi150n,. Mrs..-JI. P...Richardson, "Mrs. F. Stevens, Mrs. Bnlkley, Miss Newman, Mrs. Ilott, Miss AVar.d, and a great many of the girls of the association.
/ Miss Beatrice Day is staying with Mrs. F. M. B. Fisher. - lire. Douglas left Wellington on Saturday for her home-in Hawke's Bay.' , Mr., and Mrs. T. Lindsay Buiek (Dannevirke) are leaving oil a visit to England next month. . Mr. and Mrs. Crawford (Dunedi'n) are visiting Wellington, and are staying at tho Hotel Cecil. Mrs. Buckland Bennett and Mrs. Rogers aro staying at the Hotel Cecil. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. von Stunner, of Pupakura, Auckland,' left, for home by the Main Trunk express on Saturdav, after a short.visit to Wellington. Mrs. D'Oyley and her daughters have returned to Wellington from a visit to Christchurch. Dr.- and Mrs. Fitchett havo returned to the south, and are now staving at Day's Bay House. ; ' . Mr. and Mrs. H. Price intend leaving Wellington for a visit to Sydney. ' Mr. Kerr Clark and Lady Beatrice* Clark 'leavo Welliußton to-day oil a visit to Mr. and M/s. "Walter Johnston. At the end. of,the year, after touring New Zeahnd and Australia, thev return to England. . • Miss Y. Bremner is visiting- friends in ■Napier, and will. Inter »o on to Wairoa. Mr. Ernest Kirkbnnk li ving, B2C R. third officer of tho Whito Star Jine'r t A ei i!° }ias recc »tly arrived ab Lyttelton from London, was married at' St. Peters Church, Dunedin, on Tliu'rsdav, to Miss Doi-othy Isabel Cowie, second daughter of Mr. A. Cowie, of Caversham, Dunedin.
