THE PUBLIC SAFETY.

[To The Editor.] Sir,—As a constant traveller over tho ■Rimntaka Tailway, I should like to call .attention to tho danger that exists of a serious accident owing- to stock of all descriptions being allowed to wander on tho railway track. Not very long ago several bullocks ran ahead of an up-going train into a tunnel, where two of them wero cut to picees and the train considerably delayed. The matter was hushed up, but it needs no great effort of imagination to realise what? might, and:probably would, have occurred had the train been coming down the hill instead of croincr up. The last time I travelled over tho line several sheep raced along ahead'of the train, but fortunately ran off down the hill. Now, sir, surely in the interests ofv.the travelling public this line—of all lines in the Dominion—should be- safely fenced off against stock, and this matter should receive tho attention not only of tho Department—not only of members of Parliament— but ■■ espcciajly'■ _of every person 'who travels over this line. If an accident from this causo '.should occur—and it is liable to happen any day—tho loss of life will bo enormous, and tho consequent cost to tho country moro than-would suffice to fence tho line many timt>s over. Apart, therefore, from tho consideration for human lives, the expediency of the work from a financial point of view should appeal to tho Deiartmcnt. I should be glad if you, could through tho columns,of your paper urge on this work, the necessity for which must appeal to every traveller on tho line.—l am, etc., ' - CONSTANT TRAVELLER.
