WORLD'S FAIR TO BE HELD.
Mr. C. W. Carter, of San .Francisco, Exploitation Commissioner of the Panama. Pacific International Exposition, is spend--ing a few day's at Christchurch. 0n being seen bv a representative of "The Press, he gave some details regarding ma •mission. • , . Mr. Carter stated tliat the Exposition, which is-to be held in San Francisco in 1915, is to. mark the completion' of , the Panama Canal, and, as at present proposed, is to be the largest fair the world: has ever known. The Panama-Pacific Exposition represents an investment of between .£10,000,000 and ,£12,000,000, and towards this the merchants of San rrancisco, where the Exposition is to oo'held, have subscribed Mr. Carter 9 mission is to bring under the notice of the people of Kew Zealand the fact that the fair is to be held, and to assure those contemplating a visit to the Exposition that they will be able to get accommodation in San Francisco at rates equal to those ruling in New Zealand. Consequent on the recognition of the Exposition by the Federal Government, an invitation will be issued to the Powers to exhibit at it. It is Mr. Carter's intention to bring tho Exposition under the notice of Chambers of Commerce and otheT bodies. In addition to marking-the tho Panama Canal, Mr. Carter said that the' Exposition would commemorate the energy and enterprise displayed in respect to the rebuilding of San Francisco. Those who saw the havoc wrought by the disastrous earthquake that devastated the .city some vears ago would be astonished at the cliango effected in the fire.area, and would hardlv believe that anv great catastrophe had befallen the city. Sky-scrapere up to twenty-five and thirty stories have sprung out. of the ruins, an expression ' of the belief of the citizens that a similar earthquake is unlikely to _ occur agajn. To realise what the rebuilding of tho city has involved, Mr. Carter said that the underwriters estimated tho losses due to the-earthquake at the losses paid by tho insurance companies totalled .£60,000,000; but the rebuilding of the city had cost more than the last-men-tioned sum. Within a radius of ntteen or twenty-five miles of the city there is a population of over one million. Mr. Carter further stated that when matters in connection with the Exposition were further advanced, a Commissioner would visit New Zealand who - would be in a position to givo all necessary details. _
