Carnaghan joined the Manuka as fourth ofilcer, replacing Mr. 0. Hadfield, who has come ashore for orders. KERSAINT -ARRIVES. At 12.30 p.m. yesterday, the French, frigate Kersaint clroppeu anchor in the stream at Wellington. The signalman at the JLeads reported about 11 a.m. that the vessel was in sight, and was signalling for a pilot, and. shortly after that hour, Pilot ilayward. commissioned the .Duchess to take him out. A little later he boarded the stranger, bringing her to a. safe anchorage in the man-o'-war anchorage ground. Tho Kersaint left Auckland at 1.45 p.m. on Tuesday last, and came down the coast under easy steam (said to bo 9 knots), meeting with line weather nil the way. Looking at the vessel as . 6he lies at anchor, well out in the stream, she given the general impression of H.M.S. J'enguin, but appears to be larger than the British vessel. The Kersaint is to remain in port for some days before, proceeding to Aliaroa and the south.

Tne Aorangi is timod to reach San Francisco on March 2. ROUGH WEATHER OUTSIDE. VESSELS PUT RACK. About 8 p.m. last cveniifc a rather boisterous "southerly" came up ouUido the Heads, and shipping had a fairly rough tiroo of it. The Kahu, which left wort at 3.15 for Fast Ccast and Napier, arrived at Oroiicorongo at anchor about 5 p.m., and, at that time, a good "roll" was coming in from the south. After hanging on for a little while the captain decided to ''shift ship" a little further off shore, and, the sea increasing all the time, it waß decided to abandon the attempt to land more civvgo after two boat loads had been put ashore, and tho vessel returned to Wellington. ! The Nun, which left the wharf at 8 p.m. bound for M.otueka, met the full force of the gale when off the Pinnacles. It was blowing hard from the southward, nud. as the vessel commenced to ship "green ones," the captain dceided to return to port, and the steamer berthed at No. 13 at 9.45 p.m. j

Three other vessels were to have left port for Blenheim and Nelson last night, those being the Blenheim and Opawa, for

tho former port, and Ivaitoa for the latter. When it was found, however, what the weather was like outoide, the captains docided not to ieavo port until early- thia morning, weather permittir.s. Upon inquiry at the Heads at' midnight iast r.isrhfc, the sicnalman reported that it was blowing a sale with a very heavy ,6ea. Arriving at Westport at 3 a.m. yesterday, the Mapourika, en route from Greymouth to Wellington, via way ports, was to have left again for .Nelson at 8 p.m. Sho is scheduled to leave the latter port for Wellington direct at 7.30 a.m. to-day, and should, therefore, -arrive here about--5 o'clock this evening. . In connection with the groundinz of the steamer Wairau at Karamea, on January 24, a preliminary inquiry has been held. The evidence has been forwarded to the Jlarino Department ■ for consideration.
