The " essential characteristics of all good criticism are knowledge, sympathy, and honesty, and, in tlje best work of tho present day, these flourish as healthily as ever they did: All such writing is inspiring to the public and helpful to the theatre; and if ever the day were to como in which dramatic criticism were universally to degenerate into commercialism, log-rolling, and mere flippancy, the newspapers would sull'er from it'uo less than the beautiful art of the theatre, which in all ages has charmed civilised mankind and helped to form the character of nations. —"I'all Mali Gazette."
