NOTES AND COMMENTS. fßv Glf.xcoe.] • . The Takapuna and Riccarton meetings will lie concluded to-day. Mi'. T. H. Lowry, of Napier, is going to exploit tho Australian market, and will send a batch of yearlings to tho Sydney autumn sales. Nithsdalo was well backed on. Thursday in the Halswell Welter at Riccarton, but tho best the Treadmill colt could do was to run third. Esmeh and the three-year-old Montiform (Multiform—Happy Valley) are to be. sent to Hawera to-day to compote at the Egmont Racing Club's meeting. Lady Dot, a well-known performer, at country meetings in the Auckland district, has been thrown out of work, and is to be treated to a well-earned spell. Weights for the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting are due on Monday. H. Cairns was to have returned from Melbourne to Wellington last month, but decided to test his fortuuo a little further by waiting for tho V.R.C. Newmarkot meeting. Cairns has not had much luck, since going to tho other side, but being such a good liorseman, he is sure to return to form. Ho and another New Zealand jockey, Ronald Cameron, resido together at Glenhuntly. Parable, who won the Consolation Handicap at Trentham last month, will not be seen under silk again until the Wanganui Cup, when . the Merriweo mare will bo give a. chance to repeat the perfonnance of Boomerang. The Auckland hurdlo mare, Lady Patricia, who was once regarded as a. likely National winner, is now trained by R. Hall. Sho has been 'entered for the jumping events at the Egmont and 'l'arauaki meetings. v Among tho events set down for decision at Riccarton to-day, is the Middle Park Pinto. Owners are given a final reminder that nominations for. the Woodvillo Jockey Club's meeting close to-night, with tho club's secretary, Mr. E. J. Gothard. Nominations for the Dnnnovirke Jockey Club's meeting close on February Mr: E. J. Watt's New Zealand Cup winner Bridge arrived from Hastings on Thursday night to join Maori King, w'ho had been at-Trentham under-the care of A. Quinlivan since the Wellington Cup meeting'. . Yesterday both horses were shipped to Sydney. Maori King is still sore, but both ho and Bridge wero looking remarkably well. Midnight Sun (brother to Noctuiform) was to have gono across with Bridge, but at the eleventh hour the plans were altered.

It has been suggested that , for the convenience of the many Wellington visitors, who regularly visit the Wanganui Cup meeting that the Jockey Club should arrange a special train to oome right through t-o the city after the second day's racing. The train that'ruris to Palmersion North could, it is argued, be continued on without much trouble if the club desired it. Mr. A. E. "Whyte, secretary of the Wellington Racing ,Club;.-'desires,, to acknowledge the receipt of £1 received ■ aiionymously frpnis[cicift'f;■!■ p " G V ' By yesterday's boat tho Cliarlemagno" —Janet colt that Mr. J. Buckley purchased at the November sales,* \va,s brought up from Oamnru and railed to Porirua. This is tho latest from an Australian paper regarding tho totalisator: —Needless to say, tho possibility of tho legalisation of the totalisa'tor is greatly agitating' bookmakers. At one timo tho idea of' tho machine having the slightest ohanc.e of ..being ' installed on New South Wales racecourses was treated as a joke by its' opponents, but they rccogniso that-' the position is. now likely to prove serious-so far as they aro concerned. .Even if tho machina does como—and it is the popular wish —legislation in connection therewith may not mean tho complete wiping-out of the bookmaking division, though it, is safe to say that increased fees, etc., will cause many to drop put of. the game. Oil tho first day of tho Takapuna meeting Conquest, Dceley and Whittaker each .rode two winners, and on tho second (lay the two latter and Buchanan again scored twice. Judging by tlm form of Whittaker at the present time, it will -'not be long before ho heads H. Gray in-tho winning list. The death of Mr. J. C. Davis, which occurred in Auckland on Saturday last, romoves a well-known figure from the iracing■-world. The deceased gentleman took a keen interest in the sport, -but, being naturally of -a retiring disposition, was content with playing t-lio part of onlooker. Ho was at various times interested in several horses, but left the active part of* the business to his brother,. Mr. A. Davis. When our bloodstock, is , imported elsewhere and bred,-from generation to generation (says an English writer), it soon begins to alter in "type. Thus a Waler, though quite clean-bred, assumes distinctive characteristics, such as a goose-rump, long neck, and big head. In the United States tno average racehorse is of heavier and commoner-look-ing class than we are accustomed to see in England; indeed, they do not seem to be thoroughbreds at all. I do

not, of course,' refer to tho select ones which come to England to raco liero, but to the average sort, whicli I myself saw some years ago on American racecourses. In tlio Argentino there seems a tendency for tho bloodstock to develop bulk and weight, and in South Africa they come small, and, as a rule, not abovo galloway size. For example, two of tho best galloways at present in that colony are by Collar out of marcs which wer'o imported when in foal to that horse. Therohas been no Englishbred son or daughter of Collar so small as that, and tho inference is that the climate and herbage affect tho sizo of bloodstock bred in South Africa. RACING FIXTURES, Feb. 4.—Takiipuna J.C. Summer. Feb. 4.—Canterbury J.C. Summer. Feb. 9 and 10— Poverty Bay T.C. Summer. Feb. 8 and 9—Egmont E.C. Summer. Feb. 15 and IG.—Tarnnaki J.C.. Autumn.
