RESULTS OF BOROUGH POLLS.

A special meeting of tlio Borough Council was held last evening when alterations ■ and additions to tho present by-laws and several new ones were adopted and passed. Among tho latter are somo controlling ilus salo of meat in the borough. The Palmerston Bowling Club has elected another batch of now members. About sixty have been elected this year, and tho roll is now becoming a lengthy one. Tho committee of the Manawatu Horticultural Society met last night, Mr. A. C. Bradfield presiding. Tho treasurer's report stated that there was a debit balance of between £25 and £30. Mr. P. Black (borough curator) was appointed to- judge flowers and pot plants, Mr. F. Mayor, fruit and vegetables, and Mesdamcs Porritt and Mellsop the decorative and industrial sections at the forthcoming show. Grass fires woro in evidence on tho Tararua. hills at the back of Palmerston last evening. A committee of ladios was formed yesterday afternoon to arrange for the entertainment of tlio visiting bandsmen to tho band contcst, which is to take placo on tho Palmerston Showgrounds. Tho annual meeting of tlio Palmerstoil Hockoy Association was held last night at the Opera House supper room, Captain Hayden presiding, 'flio bal-auce-aheet showed a debit balance of £6 Is., but the secretary explained that, outstanding subscriptions covered this. Lancaster's paddock this afternoon, when there was a very large attendance, including visitors from Palmerston and the surrounding districts. The prizes ill the different standards were presented by Mr. D. Buick, M.P. Among tho prizes was a gold medal presented by the committee to Master Clive Lancaster, who has attended tho school for nine years without missing a single half-day. lie also gained a proficiency certificate, and was presented with a silver medal by the Education Board. His brother, Master James Lancaster, two years younger, has attended eight years without missing one \ half-day. The master of the school (Miv T. F. Kelling) was presented by the scholars with a barometer, as a mark of their esteem. At the. conclusion of the.prize-. •_riving, cheers were given for Mr. ISuick, the chairman of the School Committee, Mr. W. Gawith, and Mr. S. R. Lancaster. During tho course of tho day sports and games were indnlecd in,, and proceedings wound up wjth .a dance in the hall in the evening.

The Palmqrston Battalion" and Boy Scouts opened their gymnasium and school of physical culture in All Saints' Schoolroom, last night. Thcro was a flood attendance of Scouts, and considerable interest was displayed in the proceedings. A medal has.' bp?n promised for the Scout showing the'greatest improvement in all-round gymnastics. Archdeacon Harper, of St. Peter's. Wellington, was a visitor to Palmcrston to-day. llr. VC. I. Lovelock, of Aokautere, has purchased 11r. Oscar Monrad's farm at Karere, comprising just on -100 acres. liather more interest than usual was taken in tho polls to-day on the question of raising the water-works dam and providing mechanical filters. The first proposal was to raise £6600 to raise the dam 'from 14ft. to 50ft., and thus increase the storage capacity from one million gallons to eighteen million gallons. Thi? proposal was carried by a majority of 35 votes, the numbers polled being 230 for, and 195 against; Tho proposal to raise £5500 to_ provide mechanical filters was carried by SO votes,'the numbers being 240 for, and 184 against. •Between 4 and 5 o'clock this afternoon, the firebell rang an alarm for what turned out to be a grass 'fire in front of the residence of Hr. 6. AV. Keeling, in College Street, which, had spread to the hedge and trees, and, as a high wind was blowing, the houro was in danger. The brigade went out, and, with assistance, the danger was averted. It is thought that schoolchildren set tho fire going.
