A FINE JERSEY HERD.

An important sale of pedigree dairy stock is to be hold at Palmerston North on Monday, February 13, when Messrs. Dalgoty and Coy., in conjunction with tho Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Coy., will offer 30. purebred Jersey cows, heifers, and bulls, from tho famous herd of Mr. Charles Coulter, of Hawkesbury, Marlborough. Breeders and dairymen will no doubt wolcomo tlio opportunity thus offered of acquiring Jersey stock from a liorcl, tho quality of which is well known throughout the Dominion. Mr. Goulter commenced the formation of his' herd in 1881. In that year and tho year following he acquired from Mr. H. P. Hill, of Avonsido, Christcliurch, four, heifers, tho progeny of Billy I and Billy 11, bulls whose. names are to bo found on tho first page of tho Now Zealand Jersey Herd Book. Succeeding sires of Mr. Coulter's herd include a' number of well-known imported bulls, among them Dry Monopalo and Monopoly. All of the cows in t' j hsrd are. related

to these noted progenitors of first-class dairy stock. Details of championships gained by cows belonging to tho herd and other particulars will be in the memory of many New Zealand dairyfarmers. Two cows belonging to the herd, offspring of Dry Monopole, gained championship honours when exhibited at Palmerston North. Of these, Silver Queen was champion in 1903, and again in 1904. Her record was: Day's milk, 521b.; week's milk, 325111).; year's milk, 82311b. Topsy IV gained first prize in tho three-year-old class in 1903, and becamo champion in the Manawatu butter-fat contest in 1907. Tests: Day's milk, 471b.; week's milk, 301Jlb. (1908). Topsy had an estimated production of butter-fat per week of 18.4281b.

Mr. Coulter's dairy cattlo have been carefully bred- since the days when tho herd was established. Reference to stud book particulars and to the list of awards- gained by individual members of the herd will supp'y a- sufficient indication of its unqu' .ik. J>le merits.
