SWIMMING.

THE SEW ZEALAND CHAMPIOX- . SHIPS. Excitement is running high in swimming circles just at.present, the occasion being the eve of tho first A'ew Zealand championship meeting in Wellington* The officials who have the arrangements for the carnival in hand have completed all. the preliminaries, and. everything points to a record gathering. Of the two championship events to he decided on Saturday, particular interest centres ill the 100 yards, for which it is anticipated tho Isew Zealand record will be broken. The present form of Champion (Auckland), Koberts, Healy, Brice,' and Froyberg, and in tact every man in tho race, is such that tho anticipation may well be realised. There are sixteen entries for this race, which will be got oil' in three heats, which have been arranged as under:—First heat: Atkinson, Brice, Bull, Champion, Dingle, and Dawson. Second heat: I'reyberg', Grant,' Mason, O'Haro, and Koberts. Third heat: F. Seymour, G. Seymomy Strangor, D. D. Stewart, and. Wilson. The other championship event to bo decided on Saturday is tho mile, for which there are. six entries. .The gathering is tho largest swimming meeting c""r held in Wellington. In one event.alone, tho 50 yards handicap, there aro about St entries. The competitors'in tho various races include the pick of the swimmers from all parts of Now Zealand. About sixteen Aueklanders have been in town for several days, and have put in some effectivo training. Tho two Dnnediu cracks, M'Millan and Dawson, will arrivo from the south this morning, and somo thirty or forty swimmers and their supporters are expected to arrive from Christeluircb to-day. A number of tho smaller towns aro also sending representatives. An excellent day's racing is being confidently looked forward to, tho recent form shown by the Auckland and Wellington men in particular having been remarkably good. Mr. H. S. Ribbands, of Hastings, being unable to act as one of the judges of the diving, Mr. G. S. Hill, Wellington, has broil annotated in his.stead. His Excellency the Governor has informed the secretary of the Wellington Centre (Mr. H. C. W. Blick) that, ho will bo pleased to extend his patronage- to 'the gathering, but, owing to prior engagement, he will be unable to be pre6ont. During the afternoon selections will be played by tho Wellington Professional Orchestra. Various entertainments have been arranged for the visitors, including a visit to Day's Bay on Sunday.
