A BURNING COAL STACK,
CITY COUNCIL'S QUA>W3< (By Telegraph.-Special Oorresponilejrt.l : Auckfand, February 2. v The premature firing of the stock ot . coal at the City Council's power-station is causing the civic officers some concern. At the end of December last there were approximately 1000 tons of Newcastle coal stored in" the. power-station yards at Freeman's Bay. The coal' stack caught five «arly in January, evidently owing to spontaneous combustion, and all attempts ■ to extinguish the outbreak have proved unavailing. A constant flow of water from a hose has had no perceptible effect on the fire. A white, vapourish smoke rises continually from the stack, which occasionally on the surface bursts into flame. The seat, of the fire is evidently deep down below the surface. The presentstock is approximately 500 tons, and arrangements are now being niade to re- . move the coal to another portion of. the yard, where precautions will be taken to prevent a recurrence of fire.
