MUNICIPAL AND LOAN POLLS. tHy l'eicirapb.—Special Corrcsnondent.) Wanganui, February 1. Keen interest was taken in tho municipal by-election and polls on loan proposals to-day. The controversy on tho tramway extension loan has been very strenuous during the last few days, but did not attain the same warmth as when tho tramways were first mooted five years ago. Mr. Bridges retired from the municipal contest which was fought out by Mr. Grey and Mr. Robinson, the latter winning handsomely by 79G votes to 'Jtss. The tramway extension loan was carried by 713 to 22S votes. The Durietown and Aramoho special loan proposals were also carried out, tho former by G8 tu one, and the latter by 137 to 11. Wanganui, February 2. Tho Customs returns for Wanganui for January totalled .£lBlO 10s. 2d., tho figures for January, 1910, being JM277 Is. The excise duty was ,£3i7." The vital statistics for the month of January wero:—Births, 55 (previous 'January, 50); deaths 15 (1C); marriages, 11 (16). A Government surveyor is now cngnged on tho work of correcting the standard survey of the town, which is badly needed, as many fences nnd buildings aro on Mr. Tecce, general manager, and Mr. A. Black, director of the A.M.P. Society, who have been on a visit here, in the course of their stay inspected tho new Boys' College buildings, and in a letter to Mr. Bigncll (chairman of the Collego Trustees) express themselves as astonished and delighted at tho excellence of the arrangements and' the splendid buildings. They stated that there was nothing in Australia to como up to the new Wanganui College in excellence of design, construction, and arrangement.
