I . Mr. E. Trcgear, Secretary for Labour, who retired from office > yesterday, vu&. farewellod by . his staff last evening at Hie Hotel"'Windsor. The chair was occupied by- the Hon. .T. A. Millar, Minister for Labour, and amongst those.present were Mr. W. H. Haggar and Mr. W. Newton, inspectors in charge at Christcliurcli mid Dnneuin respectively. In proposing tho toast of the health of "Mr. and Mrs. Tregcav the Hou. Mr. Mil--lar referred , to the ablo manner in which/ Mr. Trogeav had carried out his work as Secretary of Labour during liis term of 20 years'cmploymsnt. Mr. Millar read a telegram from the Prime Minister expressing his regret that it was not possible for him to bo present, and stating tiie splendid service Mr. Tregear bad done for the State. On l»half of (ha whole of the staffs of the Labour Departments throughout New Zealand, the Hon. Mr. Millar handed Mr. Tre?ear a gold watch and chain for Mrs. Tregear and an album containing ths photographs of the whole o; the permanent members of the staff, past and present, for himself, together with- an address expressing regret at tho. loss of so courteous and able an officer. Tho address pointed out that since the Department was inaugurated under Mr. Tregear in 1891 its staff has increased from one, io So persons. , Mr. Tregear in reply made special referenco to the able assistance • given in the administration of the Department by Iho Hon. the Minister himself and of the close interest Mr. Millar had taken in the" Department since his appointment to llic Ministry. In conclusion Mr. Tregear expressed the hope that bis successor (Mr. Lomas) would receive ns loyal support from the staff as ho (the speaker) had received.
