EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Wellington Education Board was held yesterday, there being present: The chairman (Mr. Robert Loe), and Messrs. J. Kebbell, Win. Allan, 11. Elder, A. W. Hogg, M.P., W. C. Buchanan, M.P., J. G. W. Aitken, A. H. Vile, nnd/AV. 11. Held, JI.P;. THE BOARD'S FINANCES. According to the monthly statement of finances, tho board's funds wore in credit to the amount of .£373 19s. 4d. On December 9 last tho balance was on the other si& of the ledger—.Gl22G 19s. Debit balances were still shown iu the buildings account (JG1532 10j. 7d.), the manual and technical account {JLVH 2s. 9d.), and tha secondary account (.£255 se. 2d.), the aggregate debits being .C 1921 18s. (id., against tho total credit of" JE2295 17s. 10d. Reierriug to the financial statement, tho chairman remarked that the improved condition of the board's funds was a matter for congratulation. They w«ro now out of tho difficulty under which they had worked for some time past, and the debit balance on the building account was steadily growing less, and ho had no doubt 'that ultimately it would bo totally extinguished. He reminded members that the board was at present committed to an expenditure of something like ,£3GOO in respect of school buildings, sites, etc. The Government grant for the general maintenance of school buildings, and for additions to buildings, alterations, rebuilding, furniture, fittings, fencing, rents, additions, and improvements of sites, etc., was .£0503 for the current year, so that they had a margin .of something like .£3OOO to work upon.' ■It was not to be sunposed, however, that this easing of their finances would be an excuso for any license in expenditure. SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS. It was reported by the inspectors that as one of the four, winners of junior na--. tional scholarships, Lyndon C. Hemery, of tho Hutt, had declined his scholarship, another award had been made, that of Arthur W. Parrant, of Petone, being added to tho list, which now reads:— . Georgo Grieve, Newtown. Athol Wilson, Otaki. Frederick Howley, Ohariu. Arthur W. Parrant, Petone. There being a balance of .££B 15s. left over after the allotment of the scholarships, a sub-committee was appointed to mako such further awards as this balance would allow. . TRAINING COLLEGE STAFF. In consequence .of certain resignations and absences on leave from the teaching staff at tho Normal Training College, the following appointments and relieving engagements , have been' approved by the Wellington Education Beard as from the commencement of the year:— Appointments—Miss M. Sinclair, on promotion; Mr. John Caughley (resigned); Mr. E. K. Lomas is appointed to the' vacancy created by Mr. J. Iv. Edie's resignation; Miss A. L. Hall, on promotion, succeeds Miss M. Sinclair (promoted); Mr. G. Moricc is appointed to tho vacancy created by the promotion of Miss Hall; Miss I. lorns is appointed to tho vacancy created by the resignation of Miss-R. Fallows; Miss-E. Cray for tho present is to take the position rendered vacant by the'resignation of Miss Hind, lielievin" engagements: Miss L. N. Wilson is to relieve Miss Hitchcock from February 1 to August 8, and Miss H. M,'Webb (of Clyde Quay), to relieve Miss Thornton from February 1' to December 31.

WORKS' AND SUPPLIES./ On the recommendation of the Works and Finance Committee, grants for works and supplies were 'approved for the schools at Eketahuna, Pahiatua, Belvedere, Kilbirnie, Kaiwaiwai, South Wellington, Martinborough, Carterton, and Mangaone. Applications for works in connection with drainage at South Wellington and n regarding Petono School drainage were referred to tho Clerk of AVorlcs for a report. It was nlso resolved, with regard to:— Akitio—That application for subsidy on ■£20 "Is. Od. be deferred pending reply regarding school accommodation. Sungaroa (residence)— That the necessary repairs be executed before tho new teacher enters. Waikanae—That the offer of 30s. for old bricks !:e referred to ilr. Elder. Pahiatua—That the proposal of the Pahiatua Borough Council. for connection with drainage and water system bo approved. Petone West (application for ieave to alter room)— That tho board regard it as inadvisable to sanction the structural alterations suggested. Mangatainoka (residence)— That application bo made fov a grant for improvements. Library subsidies—That subsidies to (a) Maranui (.£2 10s.) and (b). Carterton (.£1) be approved. Tlio chairman and secretary wero cmpowored. to make renly to the" offer for a site for school purposes at Johnsonville. The tender of Mr. 0. Stover for painting at Plimmcrton was accented. It was dqcidod that the assistant teacher at Hamua l.'a paid February salary and released from duty. RESIGNATIONS. Resignations of the following appoint-ments-were accepted by tho board:—Miss Craig, head teacher'at Mount Cook Infants'; Mr. J. J. Greenwood, cadet at the woodwork classes. OTHER MATTERS. On the motion of Mr. A. H. Vile, the board resolved to further approach the Government with tho object of accelerating the exchnnge of land necessary for the provision of a suitable school site at Silvcrstrcam. The board, being entitled to three representatives on tho Wellington. '.Technical School Board, and two on the Petcne Technical School Board, Messrs. J. G. W Aitken, AYm. Allan, and W. H.- Field, M _ .P., last year's reifeimt.itives, were unanimously re-elected to the,' Wellington Technical School Board for the ensuing year. Messrs. J. \V. M'Ewan and Robh Leo represented the board on the Petone Technical School Managers last year.' It was explained, that Mr. M'Ewnn would bo unable, through pressure of other engagements, to act for the following ycer and Mr. Robt. Leo also begged to'be excused. It was, therefore, decided to rppoint Messrs. ,D. M'lCenzie. (chairman of the Petono Main School Committee) and G. London as the Education Board's representatives at Petone.
