The Duke of Comiaujjht, .speaking at a luncheon in the Guildhall, f M he hoped now that peace and union had come in South Africa tlie loaders would leave no stone unturned to make tho trade of South "Urica British, and thus help the great continent lo develop its immensemid practically-untouched resources— minerals, agriculture, and general commerce. In narrating in enthusiastic terms his impressions of his recent toiu, ho said he enjoyed meeting the Premier of the Commonwealth and the Hon. li. Lemieux. the Canadian l'ostmastor-Cicneral, that eloquent statesman of the great Dominion wherewith it would soon bo his pride to be closely, and ho honed alfeclionately, associated. (Cheers.) Also the representative of Now Zealand, so far away yet so near to the heart of the Motherland. His hearers would note the amazing change a few short years had'wrought in the representative character of the ..self-govern-ing States,.which were no longer a number of. unimportant and widely-scattered countries, .hut. four great nations-Can-ada, Australia, Xew Zealand, and South Africa—prepared to discuss at the Imperial Conference pressing problems of Empire. Tho Duke concluded by saying that although he could foresee in SouthAfrica fierce political controversies, and ■in all probability political mistakes, such as occurred in other parts of tho Em-, pire, he was convinced" that it was the steadfast intention of South, Africans to prevent any 'abuse, of free government, and make the union a great and permanent success.
