■— fr . SUGGESTED COURSE OF STUDY. (By 'Telegraph-Press Association.) ' , Cjirlstchurch, January 27. A suggested courso of study 'in preparation for journalism was ■contained in a report presented by the . Authors' and Periods' Committeo to the University Senate to-day. Tho committee recommended : " •■
. (1) . lhat a course of study in preparation for journalism bo established and that a diploma bo granted on the examination in the courso prescribed. (2) That tho following bo the courso prescribed :—(1) English language and literature as for B.A. pass. (2) General history as for B.A. pass. 0) Economics as for B.A. pass. (4) Constitutional history as for B.A. pass.,(s) Geography as for Bachelor of Commerce. (6) Statistical method as for Bachelor of Commerce. (7) Psychology and logic as for B.A. pass. ■ (8) A paper on the practical work of journalism, tho meaning of "news," the respective valuo of facts as "news"; reporting; tho writing" of heads and titles; paragraphing mid summaries; tho economy of words; interviews, preparation of copy; poof -reading; the uses of works of reference, dictionaries, atlases, encyclopaedias,- handbooks, and year books; of history and statistics and quotations; tho proper application of a knowledgo of. history, economics, and political scienco to contemporary public affairs; tho relation of a newspaper to tho public; comparison of the methods and stylos of representative newspapors and journals; advertising; general acquaintance with the mechanical' processes of printing books and newspapers; tho general organisation of a newspaper office. . (Note: A candidate for this diploma will bo required to forward to the registrar a certificate from a lecturer on this practical division of tho subject that lie has had practico for not loss' than one year in. a nowspaper office.) After a short discussion the report was adopted.
