The United States is pressing a proposal for tho lease from . England of the Galapagos Islands, for tho purpose of using them as a base-to protect the Panama Canal. Tho American Government is offering £7,000,000 for a niuety-nino years' lease of tho. islands, and is guaranteeing Ecuador its sovereignty over tho group. .
'AN EDITOR'S ALLEGATION. New York, January 26. Mr. Alfred W. Dowsworth, .business manager of the Now York "Journal of Commerce," giving evidenco before tho House of Representatives Ship Subsidy Committee, told of an 'attempt to buy editorial support in his publication in favour of tho American Government's purchaso of tho Panama.Canal property from the Do Lesseps Company.
The Galapagos Islands nro a group with an area of 2950 squaro miles. They lio 700 miles westward from the coast of Ecuador, and have a population of about '100. Thoro aro live large and eight small islands, the- largest boing GO miles in length by about 15 miles in width, and having an elevation of -1000 feet. There aro upwards of 2000 .district volcanic craters in tho group. " Tho Republic of Ecuador took possession in 1832, and established five small plantations.
