SCENE ON A RACECOURSE

Auckland, January, 27; Five men appeared at the Police Court this morning, charged that "they, with certain other persons, with intent to prevent the running of the Auckland Trotting Club's races . at . Alexandra ■Park, assembled in such manner, and so conducted themselves, as to cause persons in tho neighbourhood'to fear they would disturb tho peace, and simultaneously, without reasonable occa-' sion, provoked other persons to disturb tie peace tempestuously.". The magistrate, oh'tho request "of defendants' solicitor, agreed to reduce the charge to one of committing a breach of tho poaco, and defendants pleaded "•uilty. Tho magistrate said the offence could not be looked at in a' mild manner. Accused had given considerable trouble, arid their'action' mighthave' led to bloodshed. Ho fined each £5 and'eoste.
