NEW PROFESSOR OF DIVINITY AT OXFORD.
'APPOINTMENT OF CANON SGOTT HOLLAND. • Anglican Churchmen in all parts of the world, will bo interested in. the announcement contained in tho latest English papers that tho King has approved the appointment of the Kev. Henry Scott •Holland, D.D., 'D.Litt., Canon of St. Paul's, to be Canon of Christ ■ Church and Regius Professor of Divinity in tho University of Oxford, in the place of the late Dr. Ince. Canon Scott Holland, who has for over a quarter of a century worthily represented the Oxford traditions at St. Paul's, is the son of Mr. G. H. and the Hon. Charlotte D. Holland (daughter of tho first Lord Gifford), of Gayton Lodge, AVimbledon, and was educated at Eton, proceeding to Balliol College, whence he graduated First Class Lit. Hum. in 1870. In tho same year ho became a Senior Student of Christ Church, and in 1872 Tutor. Ho remained at Christ Church until his appointment to St. ' Paul's in February, 1884, when he was nominated by Mr. Gladstone to succeed the late Dr. Stubbs (tho-great constitutional historian) on his becoming Bishop of Chester. Young, energetic, and an' eloquent preacher, Canon Scott Holland was in full sympathy with the great revival which had then been in operation in the Cathedral for' some years. In 1883 he had been appointed an Honorary Canon of Truro Cathedral, serving also as Examining Chaplain to the late Bishop Wilkinson. He was Select Preacher at. Oxford in 1879-80 and in 1895-6. In 1903 he received a D.D. d C cr rf <> from - Aberdeen University, in 1907 a D.Litt. from Oxford, aud in 190S lie was Romanes Lecturer. Canon Scott Holland is a distinguished preacher with an original and etfeclive stylo. Since 1899 he has been "editor of the "Commonwealth." His publications include "The Apostolic Fathers," "Christ or Ecclssiastcs," "On Behalf of Belief," "Life of Jenny Liud,"
"Personal Studies," and "Vital Values." He was the author of -Faith." in "Lux Mundi," "Obligation or Civil Law" in "Good Citizenship,"- and "Church and State" in "Essays on Church Reform." lie has published volumes of sermons entitled "Logic and Life," "Creed and Character." "Pleas and Claims," "God's City," "Old and New." Canon Holland has been a strong and consistent supporter of the. work of the Christian Social Union.'
