NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[By Glexcoe.]

The Takapuna Jockey Club's meeting commences on Saturday next. Weights for the first day's events at tho Taranaki Jockey Club's meeting will bo declared on January 30. On Wednesday next the Pahiatua Cup will be decided. It is unusual to see a raco in the Auckland district in which not a single Soult horse is engaged, but this happened in the Welter event at Papakura last Saturday. Had it not been for her saddle slipping back Lady Moutoa inight have defeated Hermia iii the Flying Handicap at Foxton. On the second day of tho meeting the Soult filly scored in a very decisive fashion. On the day after he purchased Allurement for 100 guineas Mr. J. .Tamieson was offered 20 guineas on his bargain, but preferred not to sell. Despite tho fact that he -was twice beaten at Foxton Lord Soult is likely to start a very hot favourite in • the open sprint event at Pahiatua, as it is reported that ho is galloping better than ever on the tracks. Most of the South Island horses that had been engaged at the Wellington Racing Club's summer meeting were shipped homo by the Mararoa last night.

Waipunui got galloped on while competing iu the Welter Handicap at Fox-, ton, and was in such a bad way that he could not start on the Second day. He toj will he another absentee from Pahiatua. ' Unless it is decided to start Bronze in the Filly Stakes at Kiccarton, A. Oliver will be riding.at the Pahiatua fixture, and the apprentice, J.- M'Lean, will, bo- up on Bronze' in the Middle Park Plate. ' E. Murtagh did uot go to the Karioi meeting as Mr. J. Bull decided to put his son on The Native in the Cnp. Whitostone hit himself whilst competing in the hurdle race' at Foxton, and Mr. A. Rnrc sent him home. He is to be scratched: for his Pahiatua engagements. Zealand was knocked.out after his two hart! races at -Trentham, and on that account his trainer has' decided not rerun him at Pahiatua. However, M'Grath will still have a quartet,of horses racing there, viz., Gunboat, First Consul, Aberration, and Sunbonnct. The cabled account of the Hobart Cup does not make if clear whether Crucinella was started or not, but as tho NewZealand mare was favourite she probably went to the post and suffered defeat. Excellent nominations have been received for the' Wanganui Jockey Club's Cup meeting and. present indications aro that the fixture will be a big success. Rauparaha has paid.up for tho principal event at .tho Gisborne meeting, where the opposition does not appear to be very, strong. An Auckland paper states that during .the time Lord Islington was present at the Auckland Racing Club's meeting, he offered :Mr. G. D. Greenwood ,£3OOO for Danube, which was declined.

James Ryan, who became known m England as the "perpnninl trainer" owing to his having trained for the late Mr. J. 11. during the whole of his racing career, was not forgotten by his permanent employer, who showed hi? appreciation of Ryan's efforts by . bequeathing him £5000. Two • grooms also benefited to the extent of .£SOO each, while his valet and butler eac" came in for .£IOOO. ..,.<■; „■
