She afterwards comes to Wellington to coal, and is expected to leave Auckland for London next month. PATEA UNWORKABLE. Word received from Patca Is to the effect that the part is unworkable owing to there being so little. water on. the bar.. The Patea Shipping Company's steamers liana and Kapuui, which left here on Saturday, last, were still inside the river up-till last evening, but it was hoped to get . them out on- last night's tjde at 6 p.m. The Aorero and' Kiripaka, which left hero on Wednesday ..last, were still outside tho bar when tho last advices were received. STRESS OF'WEATHER OUTSIDE. Owing to stress of weather outside tho Heads last night,"..the coastal steamer 51'anaroa, which left port at 6 p.m. bound for Jlotueka. had to put back, and reached the wharf again at 7.55 n.m. . Tho Blenheim and Opawa, which we're both to leave Wellington for Blenheim, remained alongside their berths. A report from tho signalman at the'Hoads at 11 p.m. stated that a heavy "southerly" had been blowing, causing a good sea, but the weather showed tign3 of clearing. BEACONS-.AT TOKOMARU BAY. The Waiapu County Council has notified tho Jlarino Department that two leading beacons have been erected on.the shore of Tokomaru Bay (says an exchange); to'indicate as nearly as possible tho middle of the stretch of water between Hikutu Rock and the end of the reef projecting from Kotimui Point. The first uvuuuu is about 60 yards back from the beach, and 40ft.. above ordinary high water, and the rear beacon 150 yards back standing on ground 99ft. above high water. The beacons in line with oue another bear N. 84 degrees W. magnetic, and the line produced passes through Marotiri.
lONIC SAILS FOR LONDON.' "": ' Well "flown to her-marks and practically on an even keel, the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's It.U.S. lonic, presented a r.plcndid eight as she slowly moved dawn the waters of Port Nicholson Harbonr outward bound on her twentieth voyage from Wellington to London. As the big liner steamed past the H.M.S. Cambrian she dipped her ensign to the warship,' the latter responding to the compliment. The lonic carried a' good many passengers and a large general cargo, besides a quantity of butter and cheese (particulars of which appear in another part of this issue. It is understood that a great many parsengers aro to join the vessel at Monte Video and Uio de Janeiro this trip. The Coronation in June nest is said to be the attraction. The lonic, is due ,at London on March 10. Messrs. Turnbull and Co., local agents for the Walmoa, advise that the vessol will arrive here on Sunday from "Gisborne. She leaves on the following day for Kelson and West Coast ports.
Messrs. Dalgcty and Co., local agents for the Wairau, were in receipt of advice vestcrday stating that the vessel, which went ashore at the same time as the Mangapapa, at Karamea, had been floated off.
On Monday the Anchor Line's steamer Kaitoa, which has been undergoing overhaul at Nelson, is expected to arrive at Wellington for the purposo of being placed on the Patent Slip for cleaning and painting. She leaves on Tuesday for Nelson and West Coast ports. , To-day the Government steamer Hinemca. is to leave Lyttelton for Godlcy Head and Akaroa. Mr. J. N. Greenland, late purser of the Wanaka, has joined the Monowai in a similar capacity, relieving Mr. A. Murdock. who has joined, the Mocraki in placo of Mr. Matthews. >- . Both the Storm and Petone are due in port on Monday, the former from Lyttelton and the latter from Gisborne. They leave; again on the same day, the Petone lor Lyttelton and the Storm for Wanganui. Mr. A. Paton joined the Koromiko as second officer yesterday, and Mr. J. H. Fuller signed on as second engineer. Captain 0. M'Lcan is relieving Captain J. F. Ci-.awford, of the Pnteoua, while the lat> tor is on holiday leave. Captain S. Kennedy, late master of tho Taviuni, has returned from Sydney to Wellington. Advices received by'the Maoriland Steamship Company at Wellington state that tha Breeze is expected here from Lyttelton tomorrow, .and sails in the afternoon for" Wanganui. ' An expected arrival in port to-day is tha steamer Putiki with general cargo from Lyttelton. Upon completion of discharge sho sails for : Wanganui, - It is reported that the JTimaru Harbour Board are about to instal a detonating fog signal similar to that at Otago Heads. Tho Hinemoa is taking the plant and explosives down from here. The little schooner Houto, which was recently at Lyttelton, and subsequently proceeded to Whangape to load timber for Brisbane, arrived at the latter port on January 18 aiter a . fast: passage. . -Afterdischarging she will probably load', hardwood at a New South Wales port for New Zealand. ■ 'jo.'-s: ;;:■:•.•:■!
