Bunny), Councillors Baldwin, Boots, Hayes,' Pearce, Hawthorn, and Macaskill. "-..-, • The Inspector, of. Police advised ihat the question of hawking articles of food might be dealt, .with uncWr a by-law. It, however, would require special consideration, as the local police had reported that a certain hawker had not obstructed 'traffic. The Mayor said that in the easo tho shopkeepers had' a genuine grievance. Councillor Baldwin moved . that the Town Clerk be 'instructed to inquire in Wellington whether .ice. cream hawkers were licensed, and if so, to enforce a license in tho Hutt Borough.'. Tho motion was carried.

The Valuation Department wroto stating that a voucher Tor payment of £337 10s. advance on account of subsidy had been forwarded to" the Treasury for payment.

Tho Post and Telegraph Departmentapplied for permission to remove the cables-from' their present position on the Hutt Bridge, and"to lay them along tho northern- side of the footbriifgo. The engineer reported favourably on . tho matter, and the request was granted. ' Dr. Hector drew attention to tho condition of an ooeii drain through the property formerlr owned'by Mr. -Frederick, and asked if" the council would either have that nortion piped or divert tho drainage in* some other direction. Engineer to.report. , The Britannia Syndicate asked the council to take over Hume Street, in order to admit of the - property being divided up, and transferred. . Messrs. Bunny and Ayson referred to. the. same matter, and pointed out that it was the syndicate's intention to have the streets cleared, as soon as the drainage had been completed, the syndicate further referred to and .forwarded a bond for the'council to accept.—lt was agreed to accept same. On the motion ef Councillor Baldwin it was resolved that-tho engineer inspect the-street, and report. ~,,-! Councillor Baldwin was deputed to act as the council's delegate at the conference with the l'etone Borough Council for the purpose of a universal halt-holiday for the. Hutt Valley.. '■ . A ratepayer asked for. assistance in effecting drainage connection with seven houses. It was. pointed out by councillors that it was never the intention of tho council to assist. ratepayers with drainage, unless the.case was necessary from a financial point-of view.—lt was resolved to leave tho matter in the hands' of the Finance Committee. The Works Committee made the following report and recommendations:—That' the council, approach tho. ratepayers for a further loan of £10,000 to finish the drainago works,i> and to make certain additions,- including the works still to he done at Alicetown.—Hold over. That the engineer proceed with tho 'Inyin'c of the. drains in Hautana Square.—Held over. That tho drainago'of Hume- Street on tho Britannia Estaio be proceeded with at once, arid the owners charged with the cost.—Adopted. That tho council, by resolution, should recommend that, in the interests of the Hutt Valley, the Tramway Board should dissolveAdopted, lie Mr. Grapes's report on motor busses,-that the. council ask Mr. Grapes or his partner, Mr. Riley, to attend a meeting of the council, and discuss certain-points'with rliora.' Referring to the Tramway Heard iieni ill the aiwve report. Councillor Hawthorn moved that-a letter be written lo Ihe Potone Council asking them to side with the Hutt Council iii tho matter. The motion was carried. The report contained tho following, inter alia:—

Tho water main has been laid along Market Street, and-for about 24 chains along the stop bank, making 30 chains in all. Baker's- dedication is now coi»plcte, with the exception of a little straightening up. The Belmont Hill fence 'has been finished. ■ Tarring footpaths in Alieetown is proceeding. The painting of Melling Bridge commenced last week. The traffic by-law ■of this bridge is frequently infringed, notwithstanding the fact that the by-lav; is nor,' plainly exhibited at the approach to Ihe bridge. One hundred and ninety-eight permits under the drainage and sanitary by-laws had been issued to date, anil of these 177 were in use. One connection had been made with the gas main and II with the water mains, G3l water services to the present lime.
