THE WAIRARAPA TRAIN TROUBLE
CONFERENCE AND RESOLUTIONS. (By Tclecrapu.—Special Correspondent.) Masterton, January 2G. A meeting of delegates of the Chamber ber of Commerce and local bodies in the Wairarapa and Forty-Mile Bush districts, convened by the Masterton Chamber of Commerce, was held here this afternoon. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the railway service which has lately been highly inconvenient for. tho district. Seventeen delegates were present, and apologies were received from Messrs. B. B. Ross, M.P., and C. E. Daniel. Mr. F. W. Carey (president of the local Chamber of Commerce) was voted to tho chair. A series of seven proposals for the amendment of the time-table was submitted by the Masterton Chamber, and considerable discussion took place. Mr. A. AV. Hogg, M.P., proposed that the Minister bo asked to revert to the old time-table. This was ruled out of order. Eventually the following resolutions were carried:— (1) That the train leaving Wellington at 7.45 a.m.; and the train leaving Palmerston for the Wairarapa at 11.43 a.m., leaving Woodvillo at : 1.20 p.m., and arriving at Wellington at 7.40 p.m., is satisfactory, with the exception that there is no connection with the Auckland express now. arriving in Palmerston forty-two minutes after the departure of the Wairarapa train. . (2) That, with regard to the Waira-rapa-Wellington morning train, leaving Masterton at 7.30 a.m., it is desired that the old time of departure (7 a.m.) be reverted to, and that, to minimise the effect of the unavoidable delay on the Rimutaka, a non-stop run bo made between Upper Hutt and Wellington. A like arrangement is suggested with the Wellington-Waira-rapa evening train, which should leavo Wellington at 4.7 p.m. instead of 3.36 p.m. as at present. (3) That the Minister be asked to start a train at some station in the ' Bush District so that it would reach Masterton in time to connect with the early morning train for Wellington. . . (4) That, as it has been found that the present 8.15 a.m. Woodville-Wel- . lington train runs too late, this train should be altered to leave Woodvillo not later than 7 a.m., passing through Eketalvuna about 9 a.m., or, better still, that the old time-table be reverted to. ' (5) That an early morning train leave Cross Creek for the north at 5.20 a.m., so that it would reach Masterton at 7 a.m. ,',',■ (6) That the Minister bo asked to restore the train leaving Wellington
for Woodville at 4.45 a.m. It was decided that a deputation, consisting of Messrs. Carey, Coradine (Mayor of Masterton), and Loasby'(Mayor of Greytown), wait on the Minister at a convenient date, to present the resolutions. A vote of thanks to the Masterton Chamber for convening the conference terminated the proceedings.
