WOMEN AND MUSIC.

: English women composers' seem 'to find it far easier to have their works produced on tho Continent than in thenown; country. Both Miss Etliel Smyth's operas, "Der Wald" and "Tho Wreckers, woro given in Germany before they ..were' heard in London; and now another' Englishwoman, Mrs. Adela Maddisori, has brought out an ' opera in Leipsic. Tho new opera is called "Tho Talisman." It is not founded on Sir Walter Scott's novel, but on a drama ,of the same namo by Ludwig Fulda. On its production it met with a very good reception, and ran for seven performances. The critics spoko most favourably of'tho music, especially the .orchestral writing.
