PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. SECOND DAY'S PLAT. (By Telegraph-Special Correspondent.! Masterton, .January £3. The weather was beautiful if, perhaps, a little hot for the continuation of the. Wellington provincial, tennis - championships, and tho Masterton handicaps. The courts were playing very fast, and the arrangements, as before, wero excellent. Some 81 matches were ployed, and tho standard of tennis throughout was high. Of course, most interest centred in the championship, but tho handicaps were productive of many interesting finishes. Six games wero played in tho Men's Champion Singles, Griffiths beating J. Blundell (who retired in the third set), only to bo in turn vanquished by Fisher. The Swainson-Brown game, as anticipated, proved a close match, and Swainson proved too much for the Wellington man, winning by 7—5, 1— 0, G—3. Swainson was playing right at the top of his form, while Brown was patchy. There were twelve advantage games, one game running into no fewer than fourteen donees on swainson's service. The letter would certainly strengthen his game wero he to lob occasionally, but, he seems • unable to utiliso this useful stroke. • Brown led by one game up till s— i, when Swainson evened, after a-Ions; game, at,the tenth, and, going on, won the next two with comparative ease. The second set saw Brown going strongly, and he ran out at 6—4, the* third game being the long one referred to. above. . He. led (2—o) in the. third set, but then tired, and Swainson finished up 6—3. Ollivier gave a taste of his.form in his match with Cox, his volleying being particularly attractive. Indeed, both men excel in this. Cox dirt not give one tho impression that ho was pressing the Canterbury man as much as might have done, and, as. Ollivier ha 4 a wonderful reach, and the knack of makV iiig'hiarvellous recoveries, Cox had to hit hard to win His aces—a point which he' failed to realise. Many" thought that the ex-champion might prevail, even though, ono set down,, but Ollivier settled down, and, serving-all he-knew,, wore Cox down. Cox is not the.Cox of fourteen years ago; when he iron the New Zealand championship at Dunedin, but, if he could, only get 'the' practice, he' would, perhaps, improve to.something approaching his old game. '
Parker and' Brown beat the Christchurck pair in the'doubles; 7—5,. 7—5, the veteran Goss not being quite good enough for tho company he was- keeping. Brown was again patchy, and to somo of the onlookers appeared,as though ho takes too much on his willing'shoulders, and playing in so many, handicap/events must, in a measure, tire.him.' lie is undoubtedly a' splendid' giver of odds.' Ollivier's service was-very effective, and he, volleyed crisply and with . precision. Cox and Ait-ken proved too much for Fisher and Swiiinson, the latter's inability to lob proving a serious handicap to the Wellington man. .. .Parker and Brown meet the winners to-day.,
. : In the ladies'.championship singles, Miss Hartgill proved too strong for Miss Turton, although the Thorndon player put-up a: good fight, only losing G—3, 7—5. , Miss Nunneley accounted for ' Miss Brewster. Miss Travers, whose reported injury had received treatment, found Miss Wollwood willing, but at no stage was sho seriously troubled. Miss Wellwood failed on running in, and she also neglected to piaco as much-as she ought—a falling off from her past form. '
In the combined doubles, Cox and Miss Hartgill'succumbed to Fisher and Miss AV ell wood, although they won the first ss-t, 6—2. Cox's partner was eagerness and keenness personified, but Fisher was too astute. Miss Wellwood will havo to improve to-day in the final' -if she is to succepd. Miss Travers and Parker are in every final.
Brown and Denniston are the only Wellington players left in the handicap singles, tho latter meeting-Swainson tomorrow, when ho will probably find himself a free lance. Brown (from owo 10) has disposed in turn of Heatbn (30), Jlaunsell (25), and Gawith (20), respec-tively—-a fine performance, more especially in view of his other games; Ho meets Boddington to qualify for the final today.
In tho men's handicap doubles, Carr and Lawrence are in tho final. They put up a really meritorious performance in defeating Parker and his brother, 70—48. They plaved tho correct gamo in hitting at everything, and it paid.' Goro and Ddnniston, playing well, disposed of a formidable pair in Eedivard"' and J. Bl'undoU, onfy to fail when opposed to tho Wellington boys. iki onetime they seemed to bo on the way to'.victory, but the. younger pair were very solid. They now racet.Goss and Ollivier.
