BUTTER AND CHEESE.
THEIR' IMPORTANCE- IN TAIUNAKI. Notwithstanding t-ho increase of Patea as'a dairy produce port, the dairy prouuco exports from New Plymouth show a record quantity for 'th'o year 1910.
Among the figures showing the business of the port of New Plymouth for 1910 and comparisons with previous years, are somo interesting statistics.relating to the butter and cheese exporting industry. Thirteen years ago 5015 tons of dairy produce was sent out of tho' port, which quantity was h little more than 1000- tons less than tho whole of the rest of the exports. In 1899, 7105 tons of dairy, produce was' exported, which was-nearly twice as much as tho rest of the exports. Tho dairy nroduco exported had increased to 7733 tons -in lOOfl", and to 8153 in 1901, which latter quantity was about three times as great as the- whole- of the. other exports. In 1902 there was a drop ■of about 2300 tens—tho quantity was.down to 5798 tons. It rose in 1903 to 0705 tons,wa5.6890. ions in 1904, G953 tons-in 1905, 7C24 tons in 1906, and in the- following year broke all records with 8615 tons. In.19(18 there - was a.fall of 201 tons,,to 8-114 tons,' and in 1909 a further drop to 8360 tons: .But in. 1010 the records show that.92lo tons were exported, which was almost two-thirds.of.th'o total exports of the port." ' . . ' New Plymouth's exports would have been larger had things continued as they were inthe earlier days, but- the advance-', ment of Patea has'resulted in - larger quantities of the produce made in tho southern half 'of :the. province going through, there: Pate'a : now. exports as much, if not more, cheese than any other New Zealand-port.
