YACHTSMEN'S DAY.
THE ANNIVERSARY REGATTA. ; WIND RATHER LIGHT. In perfect weather the Port Nicholson Yacht Club held its annual regatta yesterday. The races were witnessed by a very largo number of people, and the'regafta generally was a success. The Boat Harbour just before the first race was packed with yachts and launches, but when tho races had begun it was practically empty. When the yachts hoisted sails tho enclosure was a moving mass of white. Topsails, balloon jibs, leading jibs, and water sails were- in use by nearly every racing yacht. For some time about b'O yachts manoeuvred off tho Clyde Quay Wharf, and they apparently appealed to the "land lubber," who,, as he passed the Boat Harbour, could not resist stopping to look at tho scene. A pretty scene indeed it was, each yacht showing every inch of canvas that could be hoisted, while tho crews, in their "whites," moving on the decks, no doubt mado the shoreman pine to be in among it all.
From a weather point of view it was rather exceptional for an Anniversary Day, tho wind, what thore was of it, coming from the hor'-west. Last Anniversary Day, it will be remembered, a southerly gale raged, and on the- previous year a northerly gale prevailed. Yesterday morning, however, it was nearly , a flat calm. All tho races were well- contested, and the only thing which the yachtsmen had to. complain of was the lack of wind. In the afternoon, however, a welcome' southerly breeze sprang up, and tho yachts began to heel over to it. Tho finish of the aftemoon/launch race caused some excitement. The limit launch Tender had rounded the Jcmingham buoy, and-was making for thejinishing line as fast, as she could, followed at a distance of about 500 or 600 yards by the scratch launch, Waiouc, which was coming up at a great rate.. As the Waione drew'upon tho Tender the interest increased, and when the Tender crossed the line just a second before. Waibno a loud cheer arose. Tho start for the cutter, race was an exceedingly smart.and interesting one. At the gup every sail on the four'cutters w.as hoisted at once ,and they were oil'. . The general handicap race in the afternoon brought out a large number of starters. .The small boat races were' also well contested. Tho following are the results of tho morning races:—' .
