LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.
.•:■■■ +— alleged sheep-stealing in the '..-.. wairarapa: Sir,—A groat deal of indignation has been- expressed at .The Dominion publishing such a-Weeping assertion, written, by its travelling correspondent, to the effect that sheep-stealing was rifo in some parts of the, Wairarapa, and especially in the Alfredton district... Now,.sir, that assertion, . which has not got tho slightest foundation, casts a very nasty reflection upon- tho whole, district; and I tako this opportunity-of challenging tho statement. It is true that there has been a considerable ■ loss .of sheep in the Alfredton district sinco last nntnmn,. but natural causes can' account for most of them, while bad counts and fences will account for''the rest. Sheep-stealing, to any extent, in such a closely-settled district as Alfredton, is out of the question. I have known farmers in this district to assert that they have had sheep stolen, but they were afterwards all accounted for. One -farmer had made a miscount, while the other was: suffering from hallucinations. Trusting that in fairness to the district you will give this publicity,—l am, etc.,- ..•.-.'..'< CHAS. CROSS. Alfredton, : January 22..
