PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.

THE APATHX OF RATEPAYERS,

(Irom Our Special Correspondent.! Palmerston, January 21. Very little interest was apparently takes in the proposals before the meeting of ratepayers which was held last night, as • there were less than thirty present. The,- ' proposals wore to raise;a loan of ',£6500 \ for'the purpose'of raising 'the' "present;, waterworks dam to 50ft.; and-a. second; loan of .£5500 to provide mechanical filtra. .tion. The. Mayor (Mr. J. A:.-Nash) explained'the nosition in regard to both' proposals, and, after some discussion, the first, proposition to raise the dam was • rejected by eight votes to-four, whilst' the proposal to provide mechanical'filtra--tion was accepted. Considering the very small meeting, it is thought probable that the Mayor will use his discretionary, power, and .take polls on both proposals.
