Further, ho had committed an unwarranted and unprovoked assault upon the chief engineer, who had been cut about the face. The accused had remarked that ho was drunk at the time, but the owners of the ship had been put to great inconvenience through fcho man's conduct. It was admitted that the im\n, while sober, was a satisfactory worker, and for that reason the owners did not desire to be too hard on him. . His Worship entered a conviction and discharge on the charge of absence without leave; on tho charges of desertion and assault West was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment on each. CHARGE OF THEFT. Allan M'Donald, charged with having stolen an oilskin coat and a pair of gloves, pleaded guilty, and was convicted and ordered to como up for sentence when called upon; he was also enjoined to refund 3s. in r-cspsct of the value of the glove?, 3s. Cd. for tho coat, and requested to pay tho expenses of one witness, amounting to os. OTHER CASES. On a \charge of drunkenness, a woman named Annie Courtney was convicted and discharged; for having used improper language she was fined -ICs., with tha alternative of 11 days' imprisonment. Another female oftenucr, Carrie Corbett, thrice previously convicted for drunkenness, was fined -iOs. (tho option being H days) on her fourth conviction for insobriety; further ehargccl with vagrancy, she was convicted and sentenced to three months' imprisonment. Ernest Lovell, with ont previous conviction, was let off with' a caution on his second appearance on a charge of drunkenness. Richard Pyner (three previous convictions) and Donald Mathes-on (two previous convictions) w?re each fined 205., with tho option of seven days' imprisonment, for drunkenness.
