FIRE IN A STABLE
I • 4 . A RACEHORSE' DESTROYED. . A fire occurred in the Provincial Stables at Upper Hutt on Saturday afternoon, resulting in the destruction of.tlw stables arid the death of the racehorse, Surmount. Luckily most of the horses that occupied boxes there were engaged at tho meeting at Trenthani and one of tho winners, Zealand, had just left foe the course when the flames were discovered. Another, horso was taken out of a box but it is understood that tho door of Surmbunt's box was locked and. before the horse could be released the flumes had readied him and he was burnt b dentil. Surmount was an aged bay gelding by Conqueror from Waiwhera (dam of Milan) and had won many races in tho Blenheim and Nelson districts. He was owned by. tho well-known Blenheiin sportsman, Mr. 11.- D. Vavasour, anil was brought to Wellington to com»pete in tho Disposal. Stakes and th»Selling Plate. ,
