Short opened tho Departmental .inquiry into the complaints of tho co-operative workers of the Midland Railway on tho Cass section. Tho inquiry was open to the press. Each man who had a complaint to make stated what it was, and aftenvards wont into details. Tho chief complaints were as to alleged incorrect measurements, lowness of wages, and high charges for supplies. In several instances Sir. Shortt indicated tho steps to be taken to remedy matters.

BOTTLE LICENSES. USELESS APPEAL - TO PREMIER. Dunedin, January 17. A deputation of holders of bottle licenses had a private interview with Sir Joseph Ward this morning, pointing out that they had large stocks on hand, and last season's licensing legislation meant great hardship to them. The Prime Minister replied that ho was uriablo to. do anything in tho matter.

HON. R. M'KENZIE RETURNING. Chrisichurch, January 17. Tho Hon. R. M'lvenzie',' Minister for Public Works, visited tho site of the new Government. Buildings in Worcester Street this morning, - and inspected the foundations now being put down. This afternoon ho-received a deputation from the Canterbury Chamber of Commereo relative to the South Island Main Trunk railway, and left for Lyttelton this afternoon. He returns to Wellifcton by the evening steamer.
