FOULING THE MANAWATU RIVER.
; FIBROUS. REFUSE. FROM MILL&. (From Our Special Correspondent.! Palmerston, January 16. Oh the invitation of the : Foxton Haiv hour Board the Polico Department is about to proceed against those flaxmillers .who do not take immediate steps to pre-i vent fibrous refuse from the mills getting into tlio Manawatu River. It appears that the refuse has come down in such quantities that it has become-a nuisance, especially in the way of forming-banks. It also gives trouble to launches on the river by fouling the propellers. Sub-Inspector O'Donovan has been inquiring into the trouble, and while several of the mills have contrivances to prevent the refuse getting into tha river, others have nothing of this description. • However, the millowners have expressed, themselves as being willing to provide the. necessary apparatus to collect the refuse, and there will not be any need, it- is hoped, for the Department to' take fur-: ther steps. _ .
