(From Our Own Correspondent.)
FiTasterton, January 13,. A marked change in the weather occurred in Masterton this morning. The barometer fell rapidly, tlio wind veered round to tho south, and a cold south-easter set in. Tho offect upon stock will be injurious, but otherwise tho chango will bo welcomed.
Current reports of consumption among the Natives of this district would appear to be somewhat magnified. So far as Masterton itself is concerned,
there aro only two or three hundred Natives in tho neighbourhood, and these, generally speaking, aro in good health. Some are suffering from a chronic form of asthma, but tho conditions of living aro very much improved to-day as compared with what they were a few years back. A suggestion has been mado that a Maori Homo for Consumptives bo provided ill the neighbourhood, but this proposal is likely to bo resented.
Tho early train from Wellington was delayed for a considerable time to-day. Owing to the rails on tho Kaitoke sido of tho Rimutaka being greasy, tho train had to bo divided and brought to tho Summit in sections. ,
A prohibited person was fined 10s. in tho. Magistrate's Court this morning for having procured liquor during, the currency of an order.
A squabble at tho To Ore Ore pa yostorday, in which a Native woman sustained injury to the eye, resulted in a chargo of assault being preferred in the Magistrate's Court this morning against a man named Thomas Carroll. After hearing evidence, his Worship imposed a fine of 10s. aud costs on tho defendant.
A new requirement of the Labour Department, that wages shall bo paid fortnightly to employees of dairy factories, instead of monthly as before, is causing some temporary inconvenicuco to dairy companies in. tho Wairarapa.. Two young men were called upon in tho Magistrate's Court this morning to contribute towards tho maintenance of children which have been committed to a Wellington Receiving Home. A meeting in connection with tho Wai.rarapa Egg Circle-was held at Kuripnni last'evening, when tho objects of tho circlo were fully explained.
