SERIOUS STRIKES IN PORTUGAL.

The employees ' on the railways throughout Portugal are on strike. The men demand an eight hours' day and increased wages amounting to £120,000 annually. ,- ''. The companies have conceded increases totalling £40,000, and' a nine hours' day. ■ No train is running throughout Portugal. The Government is organising a motor-car post.' The strikers' committee is discouraging'sabotage and violence. . The shop hands at Lisbon are also striking, for a twelve hours' day, with Sundays as a day of rest. - All the shops are closed. The Minister for tho Interior has promised redress at tho earliest possiblo opportunity. A .surprise was sprung on the city to-night by the strike of twelve hundred employees .of the Australian Gaslight Company.. . , Trouble has been brewing for some time. It' began through tho company dismissing 'an employee, a member of the union, who'was found asleep at his post, but to-night's development was quite unexpected. Unless a speedy settlement is reached, the city will be without gas, as the supply is sufficient, only for to-morrow night.
