LIVERY STABLES ON FIRE.

PROPRIETOR'S HEAVY LOSS. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondents Palmerston, January 11A fire, entailing heavy loss, broke, out in Mr. H. J. Woodfield's livery stables this afternoon, about-half-past.one. The building is a long one, tho main portion abutting on George [Street, and the other fronting Cuba-Street. The conflagration broke out in a hay shed, beside tho stables, and quickly spread through the Cuba Street building, which contained a large quantity of fombustible material—hay - and straw. Tho stables adjoin • the fire station, and tne brigade was quickly on tho snot, but the dense end suffocating smoke from the burning fodder made their work very difficult. However, they managed to confine the outbreak to one portion of tho sta.bles, but very' largo "quantities lof fodder, and some fifteen or twenty vehicles, which were in the loft, were destroyed. All tho horses, and the .portion of the plant in daily- use,' were saved. ' »/ Mr. Wpodfield's loss is a heavy ■ one, as he had iio insnranco un the stock, and only JJ2OO in tho Commercial Union on the building, which was gutted. The portion.of tho stables abutting on George Street is owned by 3lr. F. Bryant, and is insured in the "New Zealand office for <£200. CALL TO THORNDON QUAY. ' At 3.25 p.m. yesterday, tho .Fire Brigade received a call to 23a Thorndon Quay, a; 6-roomcd dwelling occupied by David Smith. The agents for the building are Messrs. Hareourt and Co. Some linen, which was being airdtl in _ tho kitchen, took firo and before the brigade arrived, tho kitchen and a back bedroom were badly*'damaged'by flames,'and the rest,'.of t'he house with heat and smoke. Tho contents wore covered by a■_ policy for ,£10(1 in the Union Office. Insurances on tho building arc not at present known.
