Davie?, C.8., will hold tluv temporary rank of brigadier-general whilo in command of tho Sixth Infantry Brigade, with the local rank of colon-el in the Imperial Forces, his brevet to date from January 15, 1902. D BATTERY TREK CANCELLED. Tiio arrangements previously made for D Battery to conclude its annual training course, with a four days' trek by of Hnywards, Judgeford, l'ahahtanui, oful Porirua,.have been cancclled, and a fresh programme 'mapped out lor tho service test in live-shell practice.. Tho battery will entrain for Featherston on the -evening of Thursday, January 19," and carry out its shooting in tho vicinity of the staff camp at Tauhereiiikau, on the three following days, returning to town on the evniing of January 2JJ. The ' tactical scheme for the test will embody the original idea for trekking the guns. On Friday, January. 20, tho General Officer Commanding (Major-General A. V., Godley, C.8.), will inspect the Battery lines, and afterwards witness the shooting which is' to ):e carried out..that day. Advantage will be taken of the proximity of the staff, camp to afford the probationary officers an opportunity of witnessing the shell practice.
THE PERMANENT FORCE. , The position of Director of Ordnance a'ml'Oihccr' Commanding tho Permanent Force, vacated by Lieut.-Cblonel ,H. F. Head; R.A.; who is returning to England, will -be filled, it is understood, by the appointment of an. officer, o! the Imperial Forces. . In the m--anrime, Major J. E. Hume, Officer Commanding; ""Wellington _ Detachment'-of-.the Royal N. 2. ArtiUery will .carry out tho.duties of the position.

' Owing to tho impossibility o£ finding a sufficient number of- trained-officers ill tho country to tho. new defence scheme a fair start, the Government have asked for the 'services of a few l'mporial officers from Home for a limited period. These officers (said Sir Joseph Ward last evening) aro merely to fill a gap until a similar number of: cadets, who'aro-noiv attending tho Military Collego in Australia, have graduated and become available.' Tho imperial ofiicers will-bo required for not more than tlirea years. At the expiration of that time their places will bo taken' by selected local officers, wlio will, it is hoped, be then sufficiently trained..
