S.P.C.A.

A meeting of tho Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held in the Chamber of Commerce last evening, Mr. J. S. Jameson presiding. ' A letter was received from a resident of Ingestre Street, ..asking if the society would look into the question of water troughs for tho animals at the Johnsonville sale yards. At present there were insufficient .troughs.—Tlio inspector was instructed to report. ' A letter was received in reference to a lame pony which the writer had noticed in Newtown. He stated that lie had told a constable to go after it, but he did not think that the constable • did so.—lt was resolved that 110 action could be taken without more definite information. A lady stated that she had seen the driver of a dray in Newtown prodding the horse with the sharp end of a piece of timber. The driver became insulting when ho was reproached for his conduct. The inspector reported that he had spoken to the man's employer about' the matter. An anonymous letter reported gross cruelty to a horse; and a motion was moved that an advertisement bo inserted in the papers asking tho writer to come forward. Mr. Watson moved to advertise in one paper only. The chairman said that he thought that if the inspector wrote a letter to each of the papers it would probably be inserted free of charge. The motion was then withdrawn, it being agreed that it was useless to pay for an advertisement if a letter could be inserted free. The inspector reported several cases of cruelty that had come under his notice, and been dealt with. Subscriptions wore acknowledged from the following:—Messrs. E. W. Mills and Co., .£1 Is.; Mr. G. Webb, 10s. (id.; Mrs. A. Anderson, 10s.; Mr. S. Stidolpli, 55.; Mr. E. W. Lowe. 55.; Mr. W. Wolland, s<; Mr. W. J. Harland, 2s. Gd.; Mr. A. E. • Preston, is. Od.; A. B. Wilkinson, 2s. Gd.; G.
