Dasent) being in tho chair; Councillors Haine, Spiers, Walmsley, .Standen; Welling,- We'ddej Burn; and llildreth were also prcsnet . .... ■ Leave of absence was granted Councillor Cathie. -
.A letter' was received from Lieutenant Herd, of the Wellington. Garrison Band, 'asking if Sunday, January 15, tfould'bo a .suitable date on . which, to give tho first of the two open air performances previously arranged for.V.lt was decided to inform the ..writer, that. .Sunday would be a suitable date. '
The officer commanding the Ist. Battalion, Wellington, wrote asking for .the use of tie Borough Recreation Grounds from January 14 to 23 inclusive, for the purpose of a military camp of instruction, and ■ also the .use of the'dressing, shed for the officers' mess. Permission was grauted on~ conditions that the tents were pitched on the western side of the centrc road; that the grounds, on that side bo used as little as possible; that the military authorities compensate the coun- . cil for all wilful' damage; also that a feo of J5 .be charged to cover cost of putting the . ground in order after the break-up of the encampment. The engineer's report .stated that maintenance, work, had been done on the following streets:—Donald Street, Chiseuhall.. Street. Beauchamp Street, Standen Street,' Main Road, and Stirling Terrace. The Quarry gang had been employed during ' the last week stripping the quarry. Crushing started on Monday, -and metal was at present being delivered at the rate-of 41) cubic-yards per day. | Tho engineer, reported that ti'2 tramway construction : poles had - been erected to date, the progress riiadc being now as far as. the Council Chambers. The work will bo finished in about three weeks. The feeder cable gailg were now working in Aro Street, between Devon and Epnni Streets, the cable having been brought from'the power-house. .Three thousand one hundred and fifty yards of cable has now been delivered and the balance will be to hand' shortly. A start had been made opposite Lancaster, Street to open out the trench for the permanent wav. The plate-laying gang expected to begin on Thursday, January 12, providing the rails are on the ground./ The work of opening out the trcnchcs opposite Lancaster Street had been done in order to keep the road leading up Buckley's Hill clear for traffic until the- rails had been placed on the ground. The permanent way will then bo connected with the tram terminus. When this is done work will bo resumed al: Church' Hill and continued towards the Council Chambers. The only trouble experienced had been occasioned through tho sleepers coming, to hand so slowly. It would be necessary for the council to provide for a -very heavy, traffic next week. , On Sunday tho Garrison Band' intended giving an open-air performance at the Recreation Grounds, and there was the'additional attraction of tho military encampment. _ _ A motion was passed giving tho Mayor, tho necessary authority to make arrangements accordingly with the tramway; and military authorities.
