PACIFIC ISLANDS CONTROL
CLAIMS OF NEW ZEALAND.
By Teleeraph-Press Association-Copyrislil
London, January 6. Referring to the statement by the Sydney "Morning, Herald," that an important movement was afoot with a view to .having the oflico of the High Commissioner for the Western Pacific removed from Fiji to Sydney, the proposal being that the position shall eventually .become a Commonwealth instead of "an Imperial one, the "Morning Post" says:—"Australia would be the natural headquarters for the High Commissioner for the Paoific. He would still act on his own responsibility, subject to the Colonial Office, but his propinquity to the Commonwealth Government would .ensure due consideration of their well-informed views. Justification for the rival claims of New Zealand, therefore, does not arise." ■
STATEMENT BY MR. CARROLL. (By Telegraph-Press Association.) Auckland, January; 7. The Hon. .James Carroll, interviewed, stated that the Government had received no intimation that the headquarters of the High Commissioner for the Pacifio were to bo removed from Fiji. If such was contemplated'the. controversy as to best administrative base—Sydney or Auckland—would cause the authorities to hesitate about taking any action.
